CHAPTER EIGHT
The day started so beautifully.
Trix woke up early, her mind almost instantly transporting her back to the moment when Mr Drake – when Felix – had kissed her.
She had barely been able to keep from smiling ever since. Trix was certain that her aunt and uncle were fully aware of the source of her happiness, and Cordelia could not have been more excited had she been the one kissing such a wonderful man on the Putney’s terrace.
In fact, Cordelia had been up as early as she had.
“Let’s take the horses and go for a ride in the park,” her cousin had said by way of greeting as she bounded into Trix’s bedroom. “I don’t know about you, but I could do with a good gallop before breakfast!”
The two of them had been out for much longer than anticipated, for the day was beautiful. They rode about Green Park, a groom trailing them at a discreet distance, and for the first time since learning that her novel had been published without her permission, Trix felt happy.
“Do you suppose that I should write and tell my parents about Mr Drake?”
Cordy shrugged. “I would be surprised if my parents had not already done so. Perhaps they are on their way to London already to ask Mr Drake about his intentions toward their daughter!”
Trix smiled but shook her head. “They never come to London if they can help it! Although I suppose it may explain why mother has not yet replied to my letter.”
“Perhaps she has a suspicion about who stole your novel,” said Cordy. “It’s possible that she has decided to confront them first.”
“Possible, but I cannot for the life of me imagine who would do such a thing,” Trix replied. She gave herself a little shake and resolved not to let her good mood be ruined.
“Shall we have one last little race before we head home for breakfast?” Cordy asked, and Trix could not think of a more perfect thing to do.
They were still laughing together almost an hour later when they strolled, arm in arm, into the breakfast parlour.
“Good morning!” Cordy said cheerily to her parents. “Glorious day, is it not?”
“I think you girls should sit down,” said Cordy’s mother, her face grim.
“Has something happened? Is it my parents?” asked Trix, even as she obeyed and took the seat opposite her aunt and uncle. Cordy, ever faithful, sat down beside her before taking hold of Trix’s hand.
“No, it is nothing like that,” said her uncle, his tone a touch gentler than that of his wife. If Trix had felt alarmed before, the pitying glance he threw at her was enough to set her heart pounding.
“You need to read this,” said her aunt, and pushed a copy of the daily paper toward her. It was open on the gossip page, which was surprising as Lady Delby did not think it appropriate reading for young ladies.
Not that it had ever stopped Cordy from reading it, of course.
This was different, however, and the moment Trix’s eyes fell on the highlighted passage, she felt sick to her core.
